Communicate with elders having stroke

My 80-year-old grandfather has a stroke, his speech is slurred. As he is illiterate, communicating with him in writing is difficult. His gets emotionally unstable and sometimes refuses to eat. We are worried he would have depression. Is there any way for us to improve our  communication and relationship with him?

  • Communicating with elders having stroke requires patience and empathy, give him more encouragement
  • Encourage him to use simple sentences, body languages and some auxiliary tools like real objects, pictures or word cards to express himself, enhancing his self-confidence
  • Communication is two-way, allow more time for your grandfather to process and understand your words. Slow down your speaking speed for his easier understanding
  • Seek help from a speech therapist if you continue to encounter difficulties in communication
  • Seek help from a psychiatrist if you suspect your grandfather is risking depression
